    Take a walk down to our bird hides for a sundowner or follow the signs to view our very own Yarrow falls and rapids. The farm is open for you to wander and explore at leisure.

    Grab our kayak for a paddle down the river or wet your line to see what's biting (bring your own rod). The Karkloof River running through our farm is haven for endless fun in the sun.

On the Trails

The Karkloof Country Club is your gateway to a world-class trail network of single track and forest roads with routes suited for all skill levels. Explore on a run or find beautiful views on your bike, you won’t be disappointed. Keep an eye on our calendar for any upcoming events.

In the Hides

A prime destination for birders with several specials and lifers to be found including all 3 crane species of South Africa. Supporting rich biodiversity of the area, the Karkloof Conservation Centre is located at the entrance to Gartmore Farm, with access to the bird hides being a mere trundle down the driveway from your cottage.

Up in the Canopies

Not to be missed is the the Karkloof Canopy Tour which has been built in a spectacular valley of the mistbelt indigenous Karkloof Forest Reserve. The tour consists of 12 platforms and 10 zip-line slides, the longest of which is 200m! A tour lasts approximately two hours, this is a safe, fun adventure for the whole family.

Around Benvie Garden

Benvie Garden is truly a must see in the Karkloof area. Established by John Geekie in 1882 the garden on Benvie Farm is a historic 70 acres situated in the Karkloof mistbelt. A flurry of flora and fauna as well as another bird-watching haven, take your time to visit this Karkloof attraction.

At the Farmers’ Market

The Karkloof Farmers’ Market is a one-of-a-kind indoor market, offering a diverse range of stalls with everything from fresh vegetables to homemade baked goods. Enjoy hearty breakfasts, premium coffee, and fun activities for kids—there’s something for everyone!

On Horseback

Karkloof Horse Adventures is located on a farm approximately 20km out of Howick. The farm itself consists of spectacular rolling hills and some steep gorges – there are six waterfalls on the farm. Packages on offer range from a 1-hour amble, 2-hour adventure ride or 3-hour picnic ride.

At the Country Club

Day visitors are welcome at the Karkloof Country Club, a multi-sports club nestled in the heart of the Karkloof Valley. It is the perfect place to spend the day cycling, running, walking (and dog walking on the plantation roads) or playing tennis; or even enjoy a cup of coffee or beer at the Café or Bar. With jungle gyms it’s a child-friendly and relaxed outing.

Along the Midlands Meander

The Midlands Meander is a scenic route and popular experience as it winds through picturesque countryside, connecting a variety of attractions such as artisanal shops, craft markets, art galleries and restaurants. The Meander is also known for its outdoor activities and offers a rich blend of cultural, culinary, and natural experiences, showcasing local creativity and the region's serene landscapes.

Under the (two) Falls

The Karkloof Falls plunges ±88m over a sheer cliff into the 50km-long forested Karkloof Valley. There is a lovely picnic area ideal for families, along with swimming and braai facilities.

With a series of walks and trails to get you a good view, the Howick Falls (also known as KwaNogqaza, the 'place of the tall one'), is a 95 metre cascade and is the second highest waterfall in South Africa (after the Tugela Falls).
